Search Marketing: SEO vs. PPC ... Which is Best?

Paid Search Advertizing in the US is estimated to reach $13.8 billion in 2010, the fastest growing marketing channel even in this economy.

Search Engine Marketing includes two major techniques Pay-Per-Click (PPC) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

The primary advantages of PPC over SEO are related to the ease of entry. The search engines make it very easy to open an account and participate within minutes. They provide tools to place ads and set bid amounts with little to no preparation. Their online reporting enables any user to quickly see results of impressions and click-thru rates. PPC is a very tactical approach and the most lucrative for the search engines.

One major advantage which SEO has over PPC is the cost involved. The cost involved in SEO is less than one-third the cost of PPC. The real advantage that SEO has over PPC is that 80 percent of internet users prefer natural search results compared to the PPC listings. The result is higher website conversions for natural search results, e.g., more sales, more leads, etc. SEO requires more upfront preparation and is more strategic in its approach. Often the final results from search engine optimization take longer to develop and are often more difficult to quantify; however the benefits continue to perform long after the initial changes are made.
