Resumes

Your resume should include:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Job objective
  • Skills
  • Experience
  • Education and special training

Contact information
To protect your privacy, most job search experts advise that you limit your exposure by including only your name, phone number, and email address in the contact section of your resume.

Job objective
The job objective can be as short as the job description or functional area (Marketing) you are applying for. Everything on the resume should support the objective and demonstrate why you are qualified.

Summary statement
The summary statement is a concise and powerful summary of who you are and why you are the best candidate for the job. Describe your most marketable skills in three sentences, including number of years experience, relevant skills, and personal qualities that all relate to the job objective. For example,

  • Goal-oriented, dynamic professional with over eight years experience in product marketing.
  • Proven to be a creative and energetic individual who enjoys working as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with a dedication to meet and exceed goals.

Experience
Present the most recent experience first, include only a 10 to 15 year work history, and only experience that is relevant to the job objective. Use action words in the past tense, such as “analyzed,” “designed,” “developed,” and “implemented”.

Each position you include should be described with accomplishments, solutions, and results. State results as hard numbers whenever possible, for example:

  • Responsible for budgets in excess of $2.8 million annually.
  • Conducted market research to target specific industries resulting in 70% growth in profits within the first year.
  • Developed networking functions, resulting in 40% increased referral business.

Education and Training
Your education and training should also be relevant to the job objective. Include relevant in-house training, seminars, and workshops and include the dates only if they are recent.
