Job Title:     Marketing Communications Specialist

Brief Position Summary:
This position will drive promotion of the Thermo Scientific brand and the division’s products and services as an integrated offering through the most effective communication vehicles and in a customer-oriented manner. This position involves working with the product and strategic marketing managers to plan and implement effective promotional plans for products and focused markets, as well as actively participating in project teams that address how to package our offering and message in direct alignment with the way customers and prospects work. Projects the individual will focus on include promotion of individual products, product series, and product lines by technique, and vertical market offerings. The specialist will provide communications expertise while planning promotional programs for individual or packaged product offerings, will participate in the planning of the budget to fund the final programs, will manage the schedule and implementation of those programs throughout the year as planned and with the appropriate other marketing and service staff. Specific programs to be planned and developed include advertisements, product and press releases, direct marketing, product introductions, sales collateral (data sheets, brochures, flyers), website, etc.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement marketing communications plans for assigned product lines and markets to meet revenue/sales goals. Includes working with Product Manager, Strategic Marketing Manager and other MarCom staff to develop effective plans for assigned product lines and markets, ensuring those plans are integrated as appropriate into the MarCom budget and campaign plans, and managing those plans throughout the year to ensure projects are initiated and completed on time and on budget.
  • Develop product, vertical market, capability, and total solution specific MarCom programs, including sales collateral, advertisements, mailers, product announcements, press releases, technical web content, etc. in a timely manner. Also includes working with Strategic Marketing Manager to facilitate development of appropriate sales tools. Through creative development, writing, editing and production, ensure all MarCom programs produced communicate in the most optimal manner, including customer focus, non-jargon friendly, appropriate calls to action, benefits reinforced for features, appropriate grammar, within style guidelines, concise, etc.
  • Work with the Product and Strategic Marketing Managers to ensure that technical/product web content for assigned product lines is written clearly and concisely, and updated on a regular basis
  • Ensure timely and effective MarCom deliverables for new product introductions within assigned product lines, including review and refinement of plans and materials produced by marketing staff.
  • Recommend expenditures and actively participate in budget discussions. Manage and implement assigned programs in the marketing communications plan/budget. Manage product line MarCom programs to ensure they stay within budget. Work with Database Marketing group to evaluate and report effectiveness of marketing communications programs on a quarterly basis.
  • Liaise with other marketing communications personnel within the division and Thermo Fisher to further integrate and package the division’s offering with appropriate products and services company-wide to form a total solution offering.
  • Work with the Regional MarCom groups to support implementation of  regional MarCom programs such as PR, tradeshows, advertising placements and direct mailers for assigned product lines
  • Support rebranding and marketing changes within Thermo Fisher, the division, and in particular the manufacturing facility(ies) for assigned product lines. May include activities such as driving appropriate change in product labeling, documentation, packaging, etc.. Represent and promote Thermo Fisher within the company.
  • Travel 15 – 25%
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Key Competencies):
  • Bachelors degree in business, communication, journalism or related field. 5+ years experience in a marketing-related function, preferably in a business to business or industrial setting
  • Technical writing skills and high comfort level with scientific topics required; Scientific background highly desirable
  • Demonstrated superior written and oral communications skills, as well as superior interpersonal/relationship skills – intercultural skills and experience a plus along with strong customer orientation
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Ability to work effectively and influence others in a matrixed environment including work within and among teams and influence others at all levels to move projects forward
  • Ability to relate independent technical offerings to a comprehensive, application or market oriented solution
  • Experience with a variety of computer programs including Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel.  Knowledge of Microsoft Project, Access and contact management databases is a plus.
  • High level of intensity and comfort level with change
  • Strong prioritization, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to express commitment to One Thermo and the integrated Scientific Instruments division
  • Ability to embrace and proactively support division priorities over individual product line goals when necessary
